Panel Discussion Held on the Topic of “German Cemetery Culture”

On Thursday, November 27, 2025, a panel discussion was held in the undergraduate course “UNESCO and German World Heritage” (instructor: Professor Christoph Hendricks), featuring Pastor Andreas Latz of the German-speaking Protestant church “Kreuzkirche Tokyo” in Gotanda. The discussion focused on “German cemetery culture,” which is recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Three students served as moderators, and many questions were also raised from the audience.
For the students, it was a valuable opportunity to engage directly with a religious leader and to explore topics such as burial and mourning—subjects not often discussed—from an intercultural perspective.
